Objective(s) :

“Science-in-Action Talk Series” is organized for Forms 5, 6 and 7 students. Each talk will include a lecture and a visit to facilities related to the topic presented.

Talk 1

Seeing Tomorrow: Decision Making under Risk

Speaker Dr. Philip L. H. YU, Associate Professor, Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science
Date & Time February 18, 2009 (Wed) 2:30 to 5:00p.m. (including tour)
Venue Wang Gungwu Theatre, Graduate House, The University of Hong Kong
Abstract: The world is uncertain and success or failure largely depends on how well you make decision under risk. The key to success is not to rely on yesterday’s news, but to ask what could happen tomorrow. This talk will describe the principles of forward-looking risk management with intriguing examples from recent financial crises.

Science - What a Wonderful World

Venue Theatre T2, Meng Wah Complex Building, The University of Hong Kong
Abstract:

This talk will visit the ideas of evolution (chemical and life) and explore some of the modern technological advances made by Man in the past century. The coverage will include: (i) the Universe and its evolutions; (b) the way we damage the environment and how we try to heal it; (c) an insight into life viewed through DNA, biotechnology, therapeutic cloning, etc.; and if time permits (d) the end of time - the Black hole.

Does Applied Mathematics Exist? — A Lesson from Godfrey Harold Hardy

Abstract:

A discussion of this issue would touch upon various aspects of science, involving deep and philosophical questions. With a far more modest aim and scope this talk looks at the issue through some episodes in the work of one mathematician of the last century, Godfrey Harold Hardy (1877-1947).
